Independently Artistic - The Legend of Sound Therapy Part 1

In the 40 plus years I have been listening to music, nothing has quite had the impact that live performances have on the industry. There aren't many places such as Sound Therapy. An independent artist movement in Nashville, Tennessee that educates, entertains and inspires hundreds of artists and lovers of the art form. I will always be appreciative of what I have learned and who I have met as a result of my years of being a part of "emcees, singers and poets". -King Supreme

I still communicate with "The Honorable" Dee Jay Magnetic. And with the movements busy schedule combined with his duties as the editor and chief of Bonafyde Magazine, it's nice to get a little Q and A from him.

K.S. - "How did Sound Therapy Start?"

Magnetic - lllSOUND lllTHERAPY began, in November 2008, as a Collective of Dee Jays wanting to ensure that Nashville had a place where one could go and hear Good Music. lllSOUND lllTHERAPY B-SIDE CLASSICS jumped off at HEBROOTS, an Art & Culture Spot on Jefferson Street. It's very important to note that FEW venues in Nashville would allow ANY Type of "Urban" Event. Even in a situation where you packed the house, and the spot made significant money off the Food & Alcohol Sales, they would eventually pull the plug if the ratio of Black/Latino vs White/Asian was not to the owners liking...

So WE (A-7, Tron, Soul Infinite, Ghost Dogg, G Diggs, Kev & Myself) would clear out the floor & set up the store like it was a small lounge. People would come out to mingle & dance to Soul, Funk, Jazz, Breaks, Hip Hop, Dub & House. Eventually we transitioned into Open Mic Battles & Featured Artist Themes. In September 2009, we moved on to the Sports Page & launched as an all Artist Showcase. Every week things got Bigger & More Exciting, and the rest is history...


K.S. - What is most important in an Independent artist movement?

Magnetic - Creativity, Class, a Sense of Building for the Greater Good-as opposed to just wanting everything to be about Self, Patience & the ability to ADAPT to the changing landscape around you. It's not always gonna be easy; but you have to always find ways to tweak the formula, while still staying true to your Core Values. The TEAM you have around you, is also of The UTMOST IMPORTANCE.



K.S. What is the future of Sound Therapy?

Magnetic - The future remains to be seen. The Story is Definitely not over. We are transitioning into a MOVEMENT. So much more than just an EVENT. Right now the Nashville Music Scene is in a really bad place. Ironically, we are back at the point where most venues are not wanting to work with anything deemed "Urban; and if they do, they are gonna TAX the promoters pockets" With that said, we are perfectly content with sitting back ans slowly planning out our next move. I can't give the Biters any new ideas, done waaaaay too much of that; but TRUST ME when I say it;s gonna be All About ARTS, GOOD MUSIC, CULTURE & CLASS...
