#Reality Check - Social Media's Addictive Power

Facebook has become a more emotional place. These emotions are frequently displayed by means of post in many variations.

A recent survey by a University of North Florida student attempted to determine a person’s emotional state during use of this social media medium. The data collected leans toward a number people surveyed possessing addictive qualities specifically emotionally to Facebook. This assumption is not without some bias as they were made with limited data.

This addiction presents special challanges. That’s because the protection of the Internet allows for more forward conversation. It has a forbidden mystique almost, as if you are a room with no one but this person. In an article titled "Don’t Let Facebook Hurt Your Marriage" first published in Woman's Day, a medical professional stated that exes, rarely have pure intentions when they seek out exes on these types of sites. This surely does fair well for the person in a emotionally addictive state. When a person has no where to turn to speak, sometimes the only means of venting is Facebook. This human interaction sometimes becomes a necessity to fulfill some people basic daily social needs.

In a May 24, 2012 published by ABC News article titled "Can Facebook Ruin Your Marriage?” people sometimes turned to these media as a way to finally end their relationships.  According to the data collected, there was a tendency to vent or express emotions.

This combined with over half of the survey participants responding in the affirmative to blocking friends for reasons other than spam indicate that survey participants used the social medium to address emotional needs frequently and at times compulsively.
